In March 2011 the government eliminated the statutory requirement for police forces to record their use of stop and account. A stop and account occurs when an officer stops a member of the public and asks them to explain their presence or behaviour in a location but the stop does not escalate into a search.
The Met had previously engaged in a public consultation on the issue, which StopWatch had participated in. On the 27 September the MPA announced they would not cease to record their use of stop and account.
